
Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18, 1970, in Newark, New Jersey. Latifah was the second daughter born to Lance and Rita Owens. She is popular for her social activism, acting abilities, and ability to rhyme. When she was just 8 years old, young an Muslim relative gave her the nickname Latifah, meaning "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah began singing with the Shiloh Baptist Choir in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" in the role of Dorothy in a play of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Latifah's mom was a major influencer as she was always in contact with the students and the music. Mark James, a local disc jockey, also known as D.J., was invited to the event.
